The packaging of any type holds a significant place for a product, whether it is its marketing or the concern relating to the safety of the product. Packaging is not done just like that, and it has become what it is after a long process of evolution. Yes! Packaging has gone through evolution like us human beings, and it is indeed something to know about! So mainly there are three layers of packaging or classes we must say, and they are Primary, Secondary and Tertiary packaging. Each one of them plays a significant role in the packaging, manufacturing, retail and wholesale industry.
Let’s find out the main idea of each one of these types and their significance one by one Primary Packaging The primary packaging layer or the necessary packaging, primary packaging is the part of packaging or the kind that is closest to the product. The reason why it is the part OR the form is that there are several types of primary packaging too! The two main types are one that is made of many layers and the innermost layer that touches the product becomes the primary packaging; then there is the packaging box. The whole box which is later further packaged into several other layers of safety separately and is not made into one (example tetra packaging, if that makes sense!). These two subcategories can later further categorized into tens of types. So original packaging performs several duties out of which its main task is to keep the product from harm, and since it is the closest, it is manufactured in a way that it protects the product considering its nature and nature of threats as well. Secondary Packaging This packaging can be better explained first with examples so that you get the main idea of what it is like. Few secondary packaging examples are tea packaging. First, the tea is packed in an aluminum packaging, and then it is put in a tin or a box. The box on the outside is the secondary packaging. This is secondary packaging in retail; there is also secondary packaging in wholesale, and that is the huge cartons and cardboard boxes in which several units are packaged in. Secondary packaging is the face of the product as all the marketing and branding is done on this layer of packaging. Given the fact that this is the packaging the customer sees before he uses the products and this is the packaging that attracts the customer and compels them to buy the product and! This is the packaging that markets the product; this part/layer of packaging also holds importance. Tertiary Packaging Tertiary packaging is the third and final (in most cases) layer of packaging. If e look at the first two classifications of the packaging we must believe that there isn’t the need for any more layer and everything is now covered. But there is an essential job of tertiary packaging, out of all the things that it does for a product, the tertiary packaging is the safety layer for the packaging that prevents pilferage in packaging, warehouse, storage, and shipping. What made the manufacturers come up three layers of packaging? The need for packaging was initially fundamental, the product needed to be kept away from threats, it was also expected to look good to attract buyers and then in many years the three main categories of packaging was formed. The needs were based on the security of the packaging, then keeping several units together so that they are not lost or stolen and then the requirement of maintaining the product in safety without locking it up and prevent theft. Each one of the subcategories of packaging is formed in such a way that the packaging performs these task based on the needs of the products. So we are down to these general points about packaging: • One layer of packaging alone can’t do everything for the product • The packaging does not only secure the product, but it also makes it look appealing • Packaging, when done in layers, provides maximum safety to the product • Each layer is fundamentally essential for the product.
